The Sunday School (SS) or Sabbath
School movement was promoted by Robert Raikes
(1735–1811) in 1780 in UK, as a means of reaching out to the listless and
neglected children in the streets. They were brought into the warmth of a
classroom (a kitchen first to be exact) and they learnt about the Bible and
salvation. The novel idea caught on and by 1786, there were more than 200,000
children in SS in the UK, and a London society for establishing SS was
organised by William Fox in 1785. It was an effective evangelistic and edificational ministry to teach the Word, as well as to
share the gospel to the children, teenagers and adults.
The Sunday School today continues to be a vital
organ of the local church in communicating a
coherent knowledge of the Bible and the elements of Christian truths.
In a time of radical change that confronts the youths of today, causing a
negative response against true religion, the SS can play a pivotal role in
grounding children at a tender age in the rudiments of the holy faith. How
many have remembered verses, hymns, Bible stories and anecdotes from the SS
classes and have been blessed and kept away from wrong. We are reminded of
the words of our Lord to Joshua in Joshua 1:8,
This book of
the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt
meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest
observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
We urge young and old
to come to SS at 9:45 a.m. every Lord's Day. There is a class for everyone
including adults. Remember to pray also for the SS Superintendent and his
team of diligent teachers. Let this be a year of Bible learning, searching
and contemplation of the Holy Scriptures, leading to changed lives and a holy
living. May this year be a year of growth and godliness for you. Amen.
